Summer is quickly approaching and that means pool season is upon us. With more people enjoying time outdoors, it is prime time for a pool safety inspection. There may be unforeseen dangers below the surface. We all know electricity and water do not mix. Being proactive is your best defense. Horizon Lighting offers a full comprehensive 8-point inspection of your pool and spa area at a low cost per pool location (contact us for a free quote). At the conclusion of the inspection, Horizon will immediately report our findings to management. If everything is safe, we can all rest easy. If repairs are necessary, Horizon Lighting will quote the cost of repairs at that time. The points of inspection will include but are not limited to:

• Ensure underwater pool lighting is protected by a GFCI. Test for proper operation

• Ensure that all spas have an emergency shut off switch. This switch must be located near the spa and have an “Emergency Shut Off Switch” label. Test for proper operation.

• Ensure all circuit breakers are labeled

• Test all GFCI’s in pool area including restrooms.

• Verify that all pool equipment is grounded properly. Includes the continuous bonding jumper between pumps, heaters and other equipment.

• Ensure all pool riser junction boxes are grounded properly.

• Check liquid tight conduit for cracks and/or damage exposing electrical wiring.

• Perform visual inspection for excessive corrosion or chemical build up around electrical components (time clocks, junction boxes, hardware).

IMPORTANT NEWS ON APPLIANCE EFFICIENCY REGULATIONS FOR GENERAL SERVICE LAMPS.

Notice from the California energy commission: Beginning January 1, 2020, general service lamps (GSLs) with an efficacy less than 45 lumens per watt (lpw) cannot be sold or offered for sale in California.

Incandescent and halogen general service lamps will not meet the criteria of the new regulation (less than 45 lumens per watt) and will need to be replaced approved fluorescent or LED lamps.

We are here to make this transition as smooth as possible for those properties that will need to adhere to the new regulations. Horizon has already been working to proactively prepare for this change.

• Horizon Lighting has been proactively offering and using LED for the last 12-18 months. This was due, in part, to this regulation. 

• During our lighting maintenance visits, we are proactively installing integrated LED ground lights and also retrofitting incandescent, A-style bulbs, MR16 and halogen PAR laps.

• Please note that there is no supply shortage, but instead just a move towards more energy efficient light sources.  

• We will continue to proactively replace standard outages with LED and will also present LED alternatives, on a larger scale, if applicable to your communities.

Ultrasonic Pole Testing

One of the many services Horizon Lighting offers as part of our Preventative Maintenance Programs is Ultrasonic Pole Testing. With Ultrasonic Pole Testing serious problems can be avoided before they occur. Think of the potential damage to property or bodily injury that a falling light pole can cause. We don’t like to think of that either. Unfortunately, to the naked eye, a pole can appear to be in great shape cosmetically. The problem is poles often rust from the inside out. Water that enters the pole via rain or irrigation systems tends to pool at the base of the pole creating a breeding ground for rust. Oftentimes it is not seen on the exterior of the pole until it is too late. What can be done about this? Schedule and Ultrasonic Pole Test today. Horizon Lighting is here to help. With our specialized ultrasonic equipment, we will test various points on each pole to measure its thickness. Once tested, Horizon will provide a detailed report which will specify the life expectancy of each pole via a rating system. You will have the information needed to determine whether a pole is in good shape, should be replaced several months from now or must be replaced immediately.
